The Union Bar partners with a Monkey

Well known, and loved, The Union Bar is a fixture on the  party scene in Joburg – popping up in a different location a few times a year, and featuring a different look and feel, as well as a beverage brand every time, Joburgers wait in anticipation to see what the new venue will be, and this year is nothing short of the usual no holds bar fun.

Fresh off the success of the Illovo bar – Union Bar is definitely not letting the grass grow under their feet, and talk about Monkey business too – they have partnered with undoubtedly the world’s finest gin – Monkey 47. The world’s most premium gin deserves a premium setting, and The Union Bar is, true to form, raising the bar!

Bringing the Black Forest to trendy Parkwood Mansions (144 Jan Smuts) in Rosebank, Johannesburg, the 47 predominantly unusual but regional botanicals, distilled in Germany and introduced in South Africa for the first time, makes for a hairy… um, heady cocktail.

Talking about cocktails – it wasn’t enough just to get the world’s finest gin. The Union Bar is also getting one of the world’s finest mixologists to collaborate on the menu, local South African boytjie Denzel Heath, to be part of the Jungle Fever.

A range of unique cocktails never seen, experienced or tasted before have made their entrance at the new bar, which is, according to Max the Monkey, Wunderbar Adventures in Sophistication. Featuring only the best from Fitch and Leedes – from their tonic to their ginger ale – it’s the perfect marriage for a monkey’s wedding.

After a detailed, if not eccentric recipe was uncovered for Wing Commander Montgomery “Monty” Collins’s Max the Monkey Gin recipe, the Wild Monkey Distillery in the Black Forest has been perfecting the gin and winning accolades ever since.

Forbes called it “An extraordinarily sophisticated tour de force”. The renowned wine critic Robert M Parker gave it 100 points on his 100-point scale of excellence. The Straits Times asked for it to be turned into a perfume.

Now open until 16 December, patrons can make a reservation at to skip the queues and get in for free.
