People of Joburg

24 hours in Joburg with Charlie Finch

Sep 13, 2019, Author: Hello Joburg

Although Charlie Finch has firmly established himself as a folk-laced force of a singer-songwriter on the Gauteng scene, he’s originally from the windy city of Port Elizabeth. His new video for single It’s Never Over saw him return to PE, and the whole process of returning home and being able to work with the people that he grew up with made this project all the more special.

08h30

I’m a night owl and stay up quite late, so I start every day at this time. I have breakfast, shower and then get dressed. I find that waking up at the same time every day helps me be more productive.

09h30

After breakfast, I usually sit down with a cup of tea and do some admin work.

11h00

Around this time, I’ll pick up an instrument and start writing – whether it be on guitar or piano. On some days you might find me in a writing session with a friend or in a studio recording.

12h00

If I end up writing a riff or melody that I really like, I’ll set up some microphones and my keyboard, plug in my electric guitar and start recording at home.

13h30

Time for a quick lunch before going back to working on whatever idea I had earlier on.

17h00

I try do some light exercise in the light afternoons like skipping and bodyweight exercises. Sometimes I just go for a run. Otherwise, if I have a show booked, I’ll be busy preparing for that.

18h30

If I’m home by this time, my wife and I start dinner prep and cooking. After dinner, we usually just kick back and watch Netflix.

21h00

I usually end up on YouTube or researching new music tech I’m interested in before bed. Either that or I watch a TED Talk or behind-the-scenes video like how a musician wrote a song.
