A simple (boozy) breakfast pairing

Flagstone Poetry Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Where to buy it: Check out it goes for R51 a bottle and R615 for 12 we think it’s a bargain.

What it tastes like: Flavours of melon and passion fruit entice the nose, with the alluring tanginess of green figs and a zesty citrus twist enlightening the palate. A lovely, lingering aftertaste with a smooth, soft finish.

Why it’s a great breakfast wine: The truth is that it’s actually quite tough to pair wine with something as simple as the avocado. Who knew? Given its rich, creamy flavour you really need something that can cut through the fleshy texture and leave an impression on your taste buds. Avo is really a big bite of omega-3 fats so your best bet is something cool and crisp to cleanse the palate. Fresh fruit flavours like passion fruit and melon cut through the Avocado’s sweetness and fattiness and perfectly complements its rich earthiness.

What to drink it with: That Instagram swoon-worthy avocado toast. Top a slice of your favourite bread with perfectly ripened smashed avocado, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice and a generous sprinkle of red pepper flakes and pink Himalayan salt. Yum!

Carly has a decade of wild, weird and wonderful experience in the media industry. After graduating from Rhodes University with an honours degree in journalism and politics, she tried to change the world as a journalist. She helped launch the country’s first integrated newsroom at Times Media (then called Avusa). After getting bored of politics and news, she joined forces with a brand activations and event company before joining a global PR agency – WE Worldwide as a Senior Account manager. This is her dream job but she still loves to be fancy with words and interview cool people so she writes for Hello Joburg.
