Monday 20 May

JEAN DOMINIQUE VACHERON

Domaine Vacheron – Sancerre, France

Domaine Vacheron is one of Sancerre’s elite properties, producing both white and red Sancerre of amazing purity and defi nition. The domaine has been completely transformed over to biodynamic farming (certifi ed by Biodyvin in 2005) with two young cousins, Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron, at the helm. No synthetic material is used in the vineyard, harvests are carried out exclusively by hand, and the only fertilizer used is produced from the compost pile. Yields are kept extremely low. Having inherited some of the most coveted parcels in the appellation (and being smart about current land purchases), the cousins are trying a Burgundian approach to Sancerre winemaking, with parcels being vinifi ed by terroir and blends varying from year to year. Pinot Noir is not an afterthought chez Vacheron, but a focus, and on soils just a couple of hours west of Burgundy, the cousins are making grand, expressive bottlings from the varietal.

EGON MÜLLER

Egon Müller winery, Mosel, Germany

Egon Müller is the name of a wine dynasty (the current head is Egon Müller IV) and an estate that is considered to be at the very pinnacle of quality and greatness of German wine, made from what many wine connoisseurs consider to be the greatest of all white wine grapes, Riesling. The grapes are grown in the legendary Scharzhofberg vineyard, Germany’s most famous, on extremely steep slopes overlooking the Saar tributary of the Mosel River. Its TBA or Trockenbeerenauslese wine attains stratospheric prices at the wine auction of Trier, often making it the world’s most expensive wine.

Domaine des Dieux produces a small range of award winning, premium quality wines. These wines are produced with the same fundamentals as the great French and European wines thus they encourage all their wines to be cellar aged, in order for them to reach their full potential. They consistently release award winning, out of vintage, wines and are currently selling their 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, 2013 Chardonnay, 2013 Pinot Noir, 2013 Syrah Mourvedre, 2011 Claudia Brut MCC and 2010 Rose of Sharon Brut Rose MCC.

ELEONORA GOTTARDI

Contra Soarda Estate, San Michele, Italy

Mirco and Gloria Gottardi established Contra’ Soarda in 2002 with the desire to create a deeper tie to their native land. Contra’ Soarda, which means “hamlet on the slope”, grows vines and olive trees with utmost respect for the environment. The 12 hectares of vineyards lie just outside of the picturesque town of Bassano del Grappa which sits at the mouth of the Valsugana that with its imposing mountains provides strong thermal excursions between night and day. The vines are densely planted to insure naturally low yelds. The cellar, built inside the hill to minimize any environmental impact, is an architectural wonder and recipient of many prizes. The soil is of volcanic composition. Focusing on the often overlooked native grape, Vespaiolo, but not neglecting the varietals that have been planted in his region for centuries, Mirco produces wines that are pure, elegant and harmonious.

RENE BARBIER

Clos Mogador winery, Gratallops, Spain

Clos Mogador produces estate bottled wines in Gratallops, Catalonia in the DOQ Priorat. Founded in 1979 by René Barbier III and his wife, Isabelle Meyer, the winery was part of a new wave of “Clos” wineries that released their fi rst joint 1989 vintage to great acclaim. They have gone on to garner impressive scores by wine critics and have built up one of the most well-known brands in all of Priorat.
