Clico Restaurant: A taste of the French countryside in Rosebank

Oct 17, 2019, Author: Amber Richardson

Despite its central location in Rosebank, Clico Restaurant does French style cuisine like no other. Although, it may not be the best place for a quick in and out business lunch, this posh spot has the food and atmosphere that make it perfect for birthdays, anniversaries or celebrations of any kind.

You may feel instantly won over when you see Clico’s bright, conservatory style dining room that overlooks the swanky champagne bar and garden terrace, but just wait until you’ve had the food! Clico prides itself on its seasonal menus and locally sourced ingredients, so we recently stopped by to try out their spring a la carte menu and it was absolutely sensational from start to finish.

For starters we had the spring chicken served with fresh peas, carrots and garnished with Parmesan. Although the dish was simple, the flavours were fantastic and there was definitely no chewy, dry chicken – just moist, melt in your mouth goodness. The Parmesan also added a bit of decadence to the classic dish. The chicken was delicious, there’s no doubt about that, but it was really the mushroom gnocchi that stole the show, which had amazing and unique flavours … especially the corn puree!

Mains comprised of Seabass, which is one of head chef Neo Mkhwanazi’s favourite dishes to cook. It was pan fried and accompanied by chargrilled broccoli and celeriac. The fish was fresh went well with the rich tomato sauce and vegetables. We also tried the succulent Cumin & Beet Lamb Fillet which was served alongside alongside a spinach wrapped potato, cauliflower and mushroom ketchup.

Dessert was the cherry on top of the wonderful menu. We do admit, however, that their dessert options are fairly limited. But the chocolate “tart” was so delicious it more than made up for it. The cake element of the dessert was made from puffed rice and was light in consistency and rich in taste. The bitterness of the chocolate was offset by the sweet caramel sauce and the fried banana. Although fried fruit isn’t usually our favourite, this banana was the exception. It had so much flavour and wasn’t mushy at all.

The service you get at Clico is also worth mentioning, as the staff are all very professional and friendly. Ulimately, Clico provides a dining experience like no other which is what makes this urban gem so unique.

PS, they also offer wine pairing with all of their dishes!
