Come hungry…Leave happy at Il Contadino

When you mention the words ‘Chef James Diack’ in the culinary realm, you know you’re in for something special. Special because he always ensures his passion and precision are behind every dish, and because he believes in ethical eating, sustainability and giving diners the freshest, ethically grown produce available.

Did you know 92% of the produce comes from the farmers around Magaliesberg, as well as his Diack family farm based in the foothills of the Magaliesberg mountain range? Chef Diack has struck gold with the location in Parktown North, and his latest venture is Il Contadino restaurant, which seats around eighty guests. This intimate, refined neighbourhood-style eatery is ever so charming, and feels like you’re sitting in the countryside thanks to its rustic charm and modern-day setting.

It feels like a place you’d find on the streets of Italy; old world yet modern, upmarket but comfortable. It’s homely, inviting and its unpretentious attitude welcomes you with open arms. This is no truer than when it comes to the menu, a menu that will tempt even the snootiest of patrons.

We suggest you order the tranche of organic heirloom pumpkin; coal roasted and served with pan fired oyster mushrooms, sumac, red onion and bulgur wheat, all topped with a delectable nutmeg and parsley crème. It’s a plant-based dish, but don’t fret carnivores, it’shearty and wholesome. Made from scratch with duck eggs, the gnocchi pesto is another firm favorite, generously portioned and velvety smooth in texture. Yum!

The eatery open 7am on weekdays and 8am on weekends for breakfast or brunch. We’ll tempt you with this… pumpkin pancakes served with a burnt sage butter and creamy ricotta, or a basic, free-range scramble on a freshly baked croissant. SOLD!
