Explore the magnetism of Mauritius and create stories with the family to tell for a lifetime!

Oct 1, 2019, Author: Bianca Spinner

All eyes are on this island destination that’s clearly overtaken the other star players within the Indian Ocean – and there’s good reason for it.

Mauritius is a mere four-hour flight from OR Tambo International Airport (kids under 12 fly for free on Air Mauritius), neither a visa nor shoes are required and once you’re there, you won’t want to stop frolicking – and the good news is you won’t have to! It’s barefoot luxury in its finest form across the pillowy soft sand. As you drift off into this isle for sweet relief, you’ll quickly find a pertinent balance within.

When to travel

With the fluctuating exchange rate, Mauritius can be steep for our humble rand – so why not book your holiday in their low season, which is much more affordable? June and July are the ‘coldest’ months of the year – and by that we mean 25°C to 26°C. Plus, it’s school holidays during this time of the year, so booking during winter is a hands-down winner!

Our top five picks where to stay

1. Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita

Location: East coast of the island

HJ Recommends: Travelling here with a newborn because without request, the FS staff go out of their way, always exceeding expectation. You’ll be collected from the airport with the latest version Maxi-Cosi car seat. In the villa you’ll find a ‘do not disturb’ baby sign, cot, changing mat, nappy bin, baby bath, Philips bottle steamer and bottle warmer, a gift of baby products from French brand Mustela and a beautifully crafted baby blanket to take home for your tot. And they don’t stop there: they even have a baby food menu. Would your newborn prefer organic eggs, yoghurt with fresh banana or poached fruit?

Why stay here: If it’s villa-style living you’re after, this is the perfect five-star plus family-friendly destination. It’s an ideal offering that strikes equilibrium between comfort and luxury.

Offering: Half-board package

Overflowing with the finest amenities and swarming with Mauritian hospitality, Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita is exactly what you’d expect it to be and then some more. Entering the resort through colossal columns of majestic banyan trees is a sight to behold, however, you’ll soon realise this is just the start. All accommodation is villa-style, surrounded by succulent, evergreen, ever-growing plant life. The perfectly manicured gardens and budding blooms are enough reason enough to visit this resort. As a bonus, each guest has full access to a bicycle throughout the stay, adding that extra touch for you as you meander through this slice of paradise.

We stayed in a one-bedroom villa, not breathing a word as we stared at our own private pool as well as indoor and outdoor shower. You’ll love this exclusive villa-style living and will certainly get used to the privacy and intimacy within this charming holiday home-like resort. Plus, the freedom of coming and going as you please is the cherry on top. Imagine dining as a family in your villa as the chef prepares a meal specifically catered to your dietary requirement and then forming a puddle plopping into the azure pool waters under the stars. Or, better yet, imagine dining on your very own private island. Of course, the resort offers a complimentary boat shuttle service to this kingdom of heaven. Surrounded by rich, aquamarine turquoise waters as you pinch yourself whilst at the beach bar sipping out of your coconut with sand between your toes. It’s important to note that this is an exclusive stretch of beach for Four Seasons guests only.
