To celebrate 30 successful years in the food industry, Fournos has introduced a new menu that now caters to vegans, ensuring everyone can enjoy the Fournos experience.

The new vegan options include a Moroccan spice veg and couscous and sweet potato Cuban bean bowl. For dessert, Fournos will be serving up its latest creamy innovation, Smoof – a fat-free, dairy-free and sugar-free vanilla ‘ice cream’ made from plant-based ingredients.Mike Kalogirou, director and founding member of Fournos, says that looking back on the past 30 years brings him an immense sense of pride, even though – much like most business venture stories – starting out was tough. “I used to put in between 14 and 16 hours a day back when we were just getting Fournos started. These days it’s more like 10 hours, but the environment is far more relaxed now compared to back then, thanks to the good teams we have working for us,” he says.

Fournos opened its first store in Rosebank in 1989 – a location that remains one of the franchise’s most popular sites. Following the success of this store, Kalogirou opened a second smaller location in Dunkeld. Today, Fournos boasts 22 thriving outlets in Johannesburg and Pretoria, and employs over 700 people, many of who have worked for Fournos since the birth of the brand and grown with the business over the years. And much like its staff, Fournos customers have played a central role in steering the company to where it is now.

“Fournos evolved from a bakery into a booming food business because we listened to our customers and took the time to understand their needs. That’s exactly why we’ve decided to introduce new vegan dishes to the menu, and why we’re constantly working to surprise and delight our customers,” says Kalogirou. “Our love for producing incredible food was recently made evident when Fournos was voted South Africa’s most loved bakery in the Santam ‘Most Loved Local’ awards, which for us is an affirmation that we’re getting things right. “It gives me a great sense of pride to think of how far the brand has come, and that the Fournos brand is now synonymous with quality freshness, good service and great value. These have been the foundations that the brand was built on, and I believe still stand today. “
