Jesslynn has always considered herself a bit of a skincare guru with a passion for discovery. As a teenager, she struggled with her skin and constantly found herself looking for the next miracle product. She was obsessed with beauty blogs and read countless skincare product reviews. Today, Jesslynn is the owner and founder of Lulu & Marula, a natural skincare range that is focused on plant-based ingredients, sustainability and the importance of supporting local.

Tell us a little bit more about Lulu and Marula and its inception.
It all started five years ago when I had the need to seek alternative natural products for my skin. There were not many local brands available and overseas products were expensive, so I started making a few of my own and found that they really worked for my skin. After selling to close family and friends and receiving positive feedback I started an online store and the business has grown so organically from there.
What sets Lulu and Marula apart from its competitors?
Our approach. Our aim is to provide products that are luxurious, fun, fresh and beautiful. We are inclusive and provide a brand that speaks to women and men of all walks of life and ethnicities. Marula oil is at the heart of the brand; we are passionate about its amazing benefits. Everything is handmade in small batches so we have complete control of the manufacturing process and quality of the products.

Why did you decide to start your own business?
I didn’t initially set out to start my own business but received a lot of encouragement from family and friends. From there, it’s just continued to grow steadily and become a thriving business.
What is your favourite thing about being an entrepreneur?
The satisfaction of being able to create a product that people use and love. Just being able to make a difference to my customer’s skin is very rewarding. It’s tough being an entrepreneur so these moments really do have a powerful impact in day-to-day life.

Which aspect of the range resonates most with your personality?
I would say the entire brand encompasses my personality. It is fun and playful but at the same time refined and functional.
Hello Joburg was first published in April 1980 as a monthly restaurant and entertainment magazine. Over the years we have developed a network of patriotic Joburgers that love nothing more than sharing their experiences in this beautiful city!
