Leisure activities #FORTHEBOYS

August 10, 2018, Author: Candice May

Hey guys. Yes, you guys. This is just for you! We know this isn’t your month, but us girls at Hello Joburg HQ are going to be the best allies we can be and stop hogging the spotlight to bring you our top manly leisure activities. It’s time to put the Xbox controller down and earn a few more stamps on your man-card!

DRONE RACING

Okay, so flying a drone isn’t as easy as it looks – and a small mistake can have big (not to mention expensive) consequences. At Drone Racing Africa, they know this, so they’ve designed the Drone Competency Course that’s specifically designed to give drone enthusiasts the practical flying skills they need to competently pilot a Remote Pilot Aircraft (RPA) or drone. The two-day-long (10-hour) course consists of two sessions – a theoretical component and a practical session. It includes technical equipment, experienced instructors and refreshments. Fly, drone! Fly!

FLY FISHING

Climb into a pair of waders and pretend you’re Tom Skerritt (or, sure, Brad Pitt) in the movie A River Runs Through It. Sundowner Adventures, the eco-friendly fly-fishing specialists, offers both fly-fishing clinics and yellow fish clinics on the Vaal River, Magalies River and Sterkfontein Dam. They also kick it up a notch by specialising in corporate fly-fishing teambuilding packages at popular luxury venues in Sandton, Muldersdrift, Magaliesburg and Dinokeng, as well as tiger fishing trips to the Zambezi River, Lake Kariba and Jozini. Their experienced fly-fishing guides will make sure that you leave with the skills of a pro!

CLAY PIGEON SHOOTING

Stop rifle-ing through the socks at Sandton City’s department stores and head to Waterhaven Country Estate for a blast of a time instead – in the form of a clay pigeon shooting experience. Shooting at clay pigeons, which incidentally aren’t actually pigeons at all (or even birds), involves shooting at clay plates that are catapulted into the air to simulate game birds and give you a moving target to shoot at. Before being let loose with a shotgun, you can get full training from experienced instructors who’ll issue you with a gun and ear protection to teach you safe practices. Then it’s time to take aim and fire at the flying discs!

QUAD BIKING

Forget hiking – the most adventurous way to explore the bush and beautiful mountains near Harties is by quad bike. (Heads up: there might be mud and puddles involved too, depending on rainfall!) Ground Zero Adventures is a short 35km drive from Sandton CBD and just a stone’s throw away from loads of outdoor fun. All their quad bikes are fully automatic and easy to ride for the novice and experienced alike, and they aim to take their groups at the pace of the slower rider. They can accommodate solos or up to groups of 10. For larger groups, ensure you make prior arrangements.
