Hey guys. Yes, you guys. This is just for you! We know this isn’t your month,…
The best things to do in spring in Joburg require you to spend some much-needed time outdoors (no complaints here!).
It’s time to forget the harsh winter conditions and embrace the spring season! There’s no shortage of delightful happenings in the City of Gold when the flowers are in bloom, from an alfresco feast with a twist to shopping at the best outdoor markets.
Take a drive out to the charming five-star Budmarsh Country Lodge in Magaliesburg where you can tuck into an elegant gourmet picnic for two on the sprawling lawns overlooking the trout dam of this former farm (be sure to order a bottle of ice-cold bubbly from the estate’s award-winning wine cellar as well!). The spectacular 25-hectare Toadbury Hall Country Hotel in Elandsdrift is another great choice. The picnic spots are nestled amidst majestic indigenous trees and magnificent rose and lavender gardens. Picnic baskets are packed per couple and offer standard, vegetarian and children menus.

Relaxing in this busy city can be a tough call, which is why we love the rooftop yoga classes at Jackson’s Real Food Market that takes place in the calming environs of leafy Bryanston to help you find your centre and stretch out under the sun. The events take place on selected Sundays of the month from 09h00 to 10h00. Make sure you keep an eye on the Jackson’s Real Food Market Facebook page for details on upcoming events. Pack a mat, grab the sunscreen and we’ll see you on the rooftop!

If you’re on a mission to find the yummiest bites to stock up your pantry or fill your picnic basket with, make a beeline for the Jozi Real Food Market in Greenside. It offers plenty of just-picked fruits and vegetables, artisanal bread, cured meats and much more. The Linden Market is the place to go if you want to score a vintage dud or trendy fashion and homeware. When you’re done shopping, stop by the gin bar, grab a G&T and then go and laze on the lawns of the beautiful Joburg Botanical Gardens and enjoy the live music.

Zoo Lake is a sensual delight during the spring season and there’s no better way to take in the sights and sounds than in one of the rowboats for hire. Each rowboat can hold up to six people, so it’s a fun family-friendly activity. If you’re going with the kids, take some bread along for them to feed the ducks. A romantic row around the lake under clear African skies is also the perfect way to spend a romantic afternoon with that someone special. Afterwards, you can take a leisurely arm-in-arm stroll around the park.
