We were lucky enough to catch up with the owner of Carlton Hair Hyde Park,…
Hello Joburgers, we say no to straws, carry our shopping around in reusable totes and style out our water bottles like they’re this season’s trendiest bracelet bag, so it’s no surprise that we’re also looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact of our beauty routines. Investing in cruelty-free skincare and eco-friendly makeup is easy, but hair upkeep is another story. Well, that’s what I thought before I started going to David Gillson at Carlton Hair Hyde Park, at least. David has worked with local celebrities including Tamara Dey, Leanne Liebenberg and Shashi Naidoo, so I knew I was in the very best hands.
Hair salons aren’t exactly sustainable ventures – just think about the water use, electricity use and all the chemicals in that pastel hair dye – but David takes steps in his salons to make the process greener where possible. He’s a co-owner of Carlton Hair in both Hyde Park and Melrose Arch and has also just opened a brand-new salon called Issy’s in his favourite city, London. Located on the ever-so-trendy Elizabeth Street, the ex-blow-dry bar is a culmination of David and fellow top stylist Debbie Postiglioni.

Carlton Hair Hyde Park is an oasis of calm in Hyde Park Corner shopping centre. As soon as you enter the salon, you feel a sense of zen. It’s likely that you’ve spotted Carlton Hair Hyde Park’s minimalistic interior on Instagram, but this upmarket salon is about much more than just a photogenic aesthetic. Using green hair brand Davines throughout, it ticks a number of boxes when it comes to sustainable credentials. Carlton Hair Hyde Park was ahead of the eco curve when it opened and David and his team are still making sustainability a priority today.
When I started going to David in February this year, my blonde hair was severely damaged from using so many chemical-laden products in my routine plus tape-in hair extensions. In just three months, he’s managed to nourish and restructure my hair to reveal, soft, shiny and full-bodied locks.

One in-salon treatment that David swears by for getting any hair back in tip-top condition is the Davines Nourishing Keratin Miracle, which gives visible results from the first application. Results last from six to eight shampoos, and repeated applications lengthen the effect. The product is rich in grape polyphenols with strong antioxidant action as well as keratin and hydrolysed keratin with strong restructuring action. David applies this treatment to my hair after highlighting.
To maintain my hair at home, I use David’s go-to products for colour-treated hair, all from the Davines Naturaltech range. Together, the Nourishing Shampoo, Nourishing Vegetarian Miracle Conditioner, Nourishing Hair Building Pak and Nourishing Living Enzyme Infusion nourish and smoothen my hair and scalp, leaving me feeling fresh and fabulous.
