Nonna is the Italian word for grandmother – but no matter what you call her – be it Granny or Ouma or Gogo…we all have a Nonna in our lives.
We all have those sweet memories of stepping into our Nonna’s house when we were younger and getting hit with all the kitchen aromas that define ‘home’ for us. We all have memories of our Nonna being in the kitchen all day and cooking our favourite dishes. We all have memories of our Nonna.
That is what they are all about at Nonna’s Italian Food Bar. It defines who they are – an authentic Italian food bar, with a cool, contemporary twist.
Recently opened in Sandton City, on the split level above the Checker’s Court, is where you will find Nonna’s Italian Food Bar – literally a culinary theatre that aims to please each and every customer by customizing a dish and making it on the spot.
At Nonna’s you can order pastas, pizzas, antipasti and salads directly from the chefs at the individual stations in the wide stylish counter made from rustic wood. The chefs prepare all of the dishes to order in front of the guests to suit their taste. Favourite dishes can be created, and then individually refined to how your own Nonna used to make it for you.
Pasta is made fresh on site daily, and you can select your favourite (as well as purchasing some to take home with you to make for the fandamily – along with sauces and a variety of home made meals as well.)
Guests get to see how the pasta is made fresh each day in the glassed-in culinary laboratory in the end of each Nonna’s Italian Food Bar. Pizza dough, our sauces and dressings, are all prepared in-house and guaranteed to be made of the finest ingredients. Raw, unprocessed, organic, healthy and fresh is what they are all about.
Thanks to the smart-card payment system, customers can swipe for a variety of products from the different counters and only pay at the end. This was created to give diners a feeling of comfort and relaxation while they eat – and works well – you can just pop up to any of the counters and add on what you need, no waiting, no stress, and just make payment when you leave.
Nonna’s Italian Food bar is the perfect setting for a quick lunch, an afternoon break, a healthy meal or a pleasant dinner with friends or family and is buzzing with people from near by offices grabbing lunch together, families having a brief respite from shopping, or friends catching up over a glass of wine and a pasta bowl.
Writing this actually made me miss my mom and my granny – possibly time for a quick phone call to the people that have played such an important role in my life 🙂
