May 28, 2019, Author: Candice May

It’s official, Hello Joburgers! Jack Frost has arrived in much of Jozi and he’s brought with him the type of cold that saps moisture from otherwise well-tended skin. This year we’re taking a stand against the cold weather and laughing in the face of the wind and rain though – we’re tackling the change in season head-on by levelling up our skincare routine for winter. Get ready to be saved by our top choice winter skin heroes!

NUXE Gentle Exfoliating Gel with Rose Petals

I instantly fell in love with this exfoliating gel because it smells like pink roses – how gorgeous? The scent is an old-fashioned rose fragrance and the formula reminds me a lot of St Ives Apricot Scrub. This product utilises antioxidant-filled lychee, roses and ground walnut shells to gently exfoliate and eliminate dead skin cells. It has a gel soap base that leaves your skin feeling clean and smooth, making it gentle enough to use on even the most sensitive skin. It’s quite a grainy scrub with chunky particles, so I use it no more than two or three times a week on my super-sensitive skin. If you have a normal skin type, you could probably get away with using this every day. Whenever my face is in need of a little cold-weather rehab, this is my go-to – it leaves my complexion looking radiant and ready to face the winter!

Sothys nO2ctuelle Detox Resurfacing Overnight Cream

There’s only one way to describe this product: it’s a wow! If you’re unfamiliar with Sothys, it’s an avant-garde skincare brand that produces products exclusively sold in beauty institutes and spas. Thick and luxurious, this night cream melts into your skin upon application, leaving your face feeling soft and supple. It has a slightly balmy (but not greasy) finish that makes your skin hydrated and comfortable and a light citrussy scent that’s refreshing after a long day. I’ll admit that when I first noticed the scent, I was a bit concerned that it might cause an irritation, but after using this product every night for a few weeks now, I can happily report that the results have been quite the opposite. With a high content of oxygen-like vitamin C booster and a detoxifying complex in the formula, in the morning my skin looks and feels smooth, plump and reinvigorated. It’s totally worth the splurge!

Skin Creamery Facial Hydrating Oil

I’ve found that my skin works better with blended oils than pure singular oils, so I’ve granted this luxurious skincare elixir permanent residence in my dresser. Above all, I adore that it’s natural, chemical-free free and organic – it gives my skin just what it needs without disrupting my body’s balance. Made with certificated organic baobab, jojoba and Kalahari melon seed oils, this facial oil gives my skin that added kick of hydration that it needs when it’s looking dry and dull. It’s also very soothing, so if your skin tends to go bonkers during winter like mine does, apply it at night and you’ll wake up to super-soft skin in the morning. The directions suggest that you apply the product with damp hands, so I like to spray some facial mist onto my palms and then drop two drops of the facial oil before warming up my hands and applying it to my face.

Cetaphil Daily Hydrating Lotion

Finally, a moisturiser that’s hydrating enough to use in winter and doesn’t break me out! This non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic and fragrance-free product is seriously great value. Lightweight and oil-free, it contains hyaluronic acid that provides instant hydration to your skin and locks in moisture to protect it from dryness. It spreads very well, and your face feels soft and light four hours after application. This moisturiser might not be enough for someone with extra dry skin, but it gives my dry, sensitive skin just the right amount of moisture. If you’re hesitant to try this because most Cetaphil products are known to be pretty heavy, you can be assured that this isn’t the case at all with this product. Given its watery texture, some may even argue that this product probably won’t work as a standalone moisturiser – but I can confirm that it definitely does!

Dermalogica Prisma Protect SPF30

When it comes to my skin, I want it all – and that’s something that Dermalogica’s newest product taps into. Billed as a master multitasker that not only defends against UV lightbut actually uses the light to skin’s benefit, it’s said to work in tandem with skin’s natural daytime defense mode to provide protection, boost skin’s natural luminosity and deliver lasting hydration. This product really makes my skin feel like it’s in an impenetrable safety bubble and fully protected from UV light, pollution and free radicals. It’s the ultimate beauty dream because although it’s a sun cream, it works as hard as my favourite moisturiser to hydrate my skin and fight off pigmentation. The result? Healthy skin with a natural glow! If you’re extra-discerning when it comes to what’s in your skincare products, you’ll be delighted to know that this is vegan, gluten-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free and cruelty-free.
