Born in Kimberley and raised in Mafikeng, Abigail is a new anchor, journalist and television…
Liza van Deventer is an accomplished South African actress and dancer, who has spent the past three years working and studying in Los Angeles.
Trained in almost every style of dance, Liza performs regularly. She is currently playing the role of Candice on Mzanzi’s popular show Skeem Saam – and although acting and dancing are her passions, she loves to surf, and is an environmentalist who loves exploring the coastline of South Africa.
An outspoken vegan, Liza believes in living a cruelty free compassionate lifestyle. We caught up with Liza to find out more…
Liza tell us a bit about your role of Candice that you are currently playing on Skeem Saam, on SABC 1?
I play the role of Candice Erasmus on Skeem Saam. She is Katlego Petersen’s girlfriend, she is a graduate of Polokwane Culinary Academy. Candice has a huge passion for food and would ideally like to run her own restaurant.
She is extremely ambitious, confident and caring but at the same time she is not afraid to speak up for herself and others. Working on Skeem Saam has been the best learning experience of my life and I am very grateful for the opportunity.
You lived in Los Angeles for several years, what was that like?
I worked and studied in LA for 3 years. I moved there directly after high school so I was thrown into the deep end from a young age. It was an incredible experience as got to grow exponentially as an artist and human being. I had the opportunity to study with incredible teachers and mentors like Michelle Danner from Edgemar Centre for the Arts who has trained actors such as Zooey Deschanel, Gerard Butler and Penelope Cruz to name a few.
I was mentored and received private dance training from Broadway Performer Chryssie Whitehead. I also attended as many classes as I possibly could from dance studios like The Edge, Millenium and Debbie Reynolds Dance Studio.
LA as a city is a wonderful place as it is extremely culturally diverse. I have made friends from places like Honduras, Australia France and Japan. There is always something to do, if you are in the mood for art you can visit places like LACMA or the Getty Museums. When you feel adventurous there are countless beaches to go surf, hike and explore like Malibu Beach, Venice and Topanga Canyon.
As a strict vegan – how do find this impacts your energy and your wellness as a whole?
I have been vegan for 5 years and I have never felt better. I used to have very bad sinus from consuming dairy. I find myself always energized and fueled on this lifestyle as being vegan promotes eating whole plant based foods in abundance.
The great thing about veganism is that you can maintain a healthy lean body without restricting yourself. Recently I had my blood work done and I have no deficiencies. The only supplement I would recommend for vegans is a B12 pill. They fortify animals’ feed with B12 and that is how humans ingest it by eating animal products. Being vegan has made me a more compassionate person towards other people, animals and myself.
What is your fitness secret?
I try move my body every day whether it’s attending a Sweat1000 class, a long walk next to the ocean, surfing or attending a ballet class. Mental health and happiness is my biggest motivator in eating healthy and exercising. I try eat an abundance of greens with every meal as they contain the most nutrients and vitamins but I am also a firm believer in balance so occasionally I enjoy a slice of vegan chocolate cake and the odd Oreo (that are accidentally vegan by the way). For me it is all about self love and taking care of yourself.
What is your favourite South African food and why?
I am a big fan of the traditional spinach and peanut butter dish. It’s a strange combination but it tastes delicious and like most vegans I LOVE peanut butter. I also enjoy poetoe pap with sugar and soy milk of course 😉
Books or movies and why?
Even though I am an actress and I am basically obsessed with films I would have to say books as you are able to create your own depiction of the story. Mentally it has a more calming effect and it helps stimulate your imagination which is helpful in every way! I enjoy fiction but I am also a huge fan of non fiction books that motivate people about the power of positive energy like “The Secret” and “Awaken The Giant Within” By Tony Robbins
Favourite item of clothing right now, that you cannot live without?
I used to work for the ex super model Lauren Hutton when I lived in LA. She gave me a vintage Michael Kors dress from the 70’s. I am in love with vintage pieces.I have worn it to countless events and shoots as I feel that it’s timeless with so much sentimental value.
If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why?
I would loved to have dinner with Ghandi as he was a firm believer of the plant based lifestyle and to be able to learn from his wisdom and hear his compassionate views on life would have been invaluable.
