Restaurant of the month: Turn ń Tender Parktown North

A quintessential classic steakhouse bent on quality in one of Joburg’s trendiest neighbourhoods, Turn ‘n Tender Parktown North is subtly redefying the experience of a great steak one bite at a time.

What started out as a story of four brothers in 1977 with a love for great steak, an excellent taste in wine and a passion for creating a warm welcoming atmosphere has since turned into a firm South African favourite, a legend franchise among all generations.

Turn ‘n Tender Parktown North opened in 2007 by franchise owner Brian Aaron. Since then Guy Donald, who was originally hired to run the Illovo restaurant 8 years ago, fell in love with the space and is now the owner. “The wholesome family-run style of the group was what attracted me. We are in the people business, with food being the by-product and not the other way around” says Guy who runs his restaurant with that motto in mind. From the minute you set foot through the door you instantly feel welcomed and appreciated as every member of the staff greets you with an inviting smile.

The restaurant offers a unique experience with an intimate and personal space and a feel that’s centred around pavement style dining as the restaurant is located on one of Joburg’s trendiest street corners.

This meat lovers delight prides itself in being a premium steakhouse that caters to businesses and families alike; everyone is welcome! The focus here is on the food, exceptional ingredients and an atmosphere that will have you coming back for more.

The menu offers something for everyone with a variety of superior quality cuts of meat from fillet, sirloin and T-bone to rib-eye on the bone and prime rib along with signature cuts like rump with no fat, rump with fat, point rump and the Entrecote which is a premium cut from the loin with an extra tail of fat that adds a rich flavour. Choose from the original Turn ‘n Tender basting, plain grilled, chilli basting, fresh herbs and spices or our personal favourite, the dry pepper coating. There is also a wide variety of seafood and vegetarian options featured and we highly recommend the veg burger which is made with two deep-fried Grana Padano-crumbed aubergine slices layered with goat’s cheese, topped with grilled onions and served on a toasted brioche bun, it’s truly delicious, trust us!

Turn ‘n Tender Parktown North also has a signature menu that’s unique to this restaurant and on it, you will find a variety of experimental dishes and some that have been developed by Guy himself. The restaurant also offers a wine pairing menu with recommendations to accompany all your Turn ‘n Tender favorites.
