Hello Joburgers, if your skin gets red, itchy and irritated on the regular, you most likely have sensitive skin. Don’t worry – I do too. What this essentially means is that your skin’s barrier is consistently compromised, leaving your face highly reactive to inflammatory triggers, such as drinking too much coffee or alcohol, smoking, the weather and, yes, even your skincare products.
It’s easy for your mind (or skin) to get overwhelmed by the abundance of super-creams and state-of-the-art gizmos promising complexion transformation, but there’s one select beauty brand that’s making it easy to get back to basics: Eau Thermale Avène.
Avène offers a range of dermo-cosmetic skincare products for all types of sensitive skin and is a leading skincare line in European pharmacies. It isn’t a new brand, but I’ll admit I only came across it recently at my local Dis-Chem. Coincidently, not so long after purchasing Avène’s most popular product, the Avène Thermal Spring Water, I was invited to a press launch where the brand unveiled its new products.
It was here that I learned that the thermal spring water is at the heart of all its products, and that this remarkable water has a unique biological and mineral heritage along with an efficacy that’s been demonstrated in more than 150 scientific studies. How impressive is that? The thermal water is used at the Avène Hydrotherapy Center in France for its soothing, anti-irritating and soothing properties in the treatment of skin pathologies.
I’ve been using Avène products for a couple of months now and I’m beyond thrilled with the results! These are the top three products I just can’t get enough of and highly recommend to anyone with sensitive skin like mine:

Avène Thermal Spring Water
Of course this product tops the list! Avène Thermal Spring Water is a hypoallergenic spring water spray that provides instant relief for sensitive skin. I’ll be honest – my first thought after buying it was, “this is fun to use, but does it actually have any benefit?”
After using it on my dry, sensitive skin for a few weeks, I noticed a huge difference in my skin’s hydration levels. I love that the mist is very, very fine – far more than you could ever recreate with an atomiser – and the water itself isn’t harsh or drying, but rather hydrating and soothing. Now, I have several sizes of the cans. The biggest one is the best value for money, but I like having the smaller ones to carry when I go to work or travel.
My favourite uses for this product include to freshen up tired or dull skin throughout the day, to give moisturisers or face creams an extra hydrating boost, to cleanse and soothe irritated skin after removing my makeup, to set my final makeup look so it stays in place all day and to prep my Beautyblender or makeup sponge on the go.

Avène TriXera Nutrition Nutri-Fluid Cleanser
I thought I’d never find a super-high tolerance daily cleanser that helps control inflammation, restores my skin’s natural barrier and soothes my very dry, atopic skin until I came across Avène TriXera Nutrition Nutri-Fluid Cleanser.
The foaming gel formula is soap-free and biodegradable, so it cleanses and nourishes sensitive skin in the gentlest way possible. It has a very subtle yet noticeably ‘clean’ fragrance – it smells absolutely heavenly! I would love a body spray in this fragrance. As a bonus, you can use it on both your face and body. If you have a family, even better news – it’s safe to use on children ages three and up. I haven’t tried it on my face, but I’ve been using it on my body twice a day and it hasn’t broken me out once like most shower gels do.
Once a week, I give my body a good scrub down using a few pumps of this products and my exfoliating gloves. Even though the gloves can be harsh, the product protects my skin and I don’t suffer from any post-exfoliation redness or itchiness like I normally would after getting out the bath or show. This product is also a winner for when you’re wanting to remove a stubborn spray tan without being too harsh on your skin.

Avène TriXera Nutrition Nutri-Fluid Lotion
Last, but certainly not least, is the lightweight, nourishing Avène TriXera Nutrition Nutri-Fluid Lotion that provides 48-hour hydration (you read that right) to nourish and protect dry, sensitive skin. Enriched with ceramides and essential fatty acids, it smooths and softens your skin like a dream.
This is yet another product in the TriXera range that can be used on both your face and body. I’ve tried this one on my face a few times and have no complaints. What I love the most is that while it’s moisturising and there’s a slight oily component to it, it doesn’t leave my skin feeling sticky, so it’s comfortable to use all over. Like the cleanser, it also has a delightful fragrance that will make you want to use it every day. This is now my go-to body lotion – it’s had a huge impact on my skin, particularly in dry areas like my elbows knees, and makes my skin look and feel healthy after applying it.
If, like me, you get spray tans frequently or use self-tanning products to keep that picture-pretty glow, you’ll know that dry skin makes it hard to keep your sunless tan looking fresh and smooth. Well, this lotion is so intensely hydrating that it extends the life of my spray tans up to 10 days and makes sure it fades evenly. It also doesn’t contain any bad ingredients that can mess with your tan, such as alcohol or mineral oil. It gets a double thumbs up from me!
If Avène products have changed your life too, I’d love to hear more about your experience in the comments below!
