We are kind of excited about the Autumn Essentials Promotion now on at the spa…
The premium grillhouse we all know and love has a brand-new home at Silverstar Casino – it’s fifth location in Gauteng – and its definitely worth a visit! As per expectation, this 55-year old restaurant impressed us with their extensive choice of steaks, drinks and even vegetarian options. One thing’s for sure if you’re looking for a hearty meal, you won’t find a better one than at The Hussar Grill.
Our evening began with starters – Italian tomato soup and the trio of snails. We know that some people frown upon the idea of soup as a starter, but this tasty creation was so delicious it would convert even the fussiest of diners – the only thing we could fault it on was the portion size which was a bit too large for a starter. The snails were another dish that didn’t fail to impress. They were expertly cooked and served in three mouth-watering sauces; garlic butter, smoked paprika and rosemary compound butter and blue cheese – the garlic butter was our favourite, but all three were superb.

For mains, we were truly spoilt for choice, as the menu has a dish for just about every taste. All of the options were quite classic – think half chicken, kingklip and grilled salmon. Of course, there were two full pages of different kinds of steaks to choose from. From rump to pork belly, to game and everything in between. In the end we settled for the fillet béarnaise – a beef filet topped with a classic sauce made with butter and egg whites. Béarnaise is often considered the king of steak sauces and we have to agree! It was creamy and full of flavour, but didn’t overpower the taste of the meat.
To accompany the steak, we enjoyed a glass of The Hussar 50th anniversary blend. This moreish red blend was made in commemoration of the restaurant’s 50th birthday and we can imagine it pairing perfectly with almost any of their dishes, but particularly the steaks! For only R165 a bottle, we highly recommend you try it out!

Another must-try is the patagonian calamari which comprised of flash-fried tubes of tender calamari and squid head, which is just one more example of The Hussar’s ability to execute classic dishes expertly. Other notable options for non-meat eaters include the fried halloumi which is served on a bed of sautéed green beans and roasted vegetables, lentil curry and mushroom and butternut gnocchi.
The décor is everything you could expect from a steakhouse, it’s warm, inviting and boasts classic touches like chandeliers and leather seating. There’s also a fantastic outdoor seating area which offers diners stunning views of the fountains and outdoor court at Silverstar.

Dessert was yet another course to write home about. We went with the crème brûlée and the vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. Other contenders were the chocolate fondant, baked cheesecake and malva pudding – which would have been our first choice if we weren’t so full from the other courses! The crème brûlée was hands down the best we’ve tasted so far and was the perfect way to end off a truly delicious meal. Meat lover, pescetarian, vegetarian – whatever! The Hussar Grill at Silverstar Casino is a new restaurant that’s truly worth stopping by.
