Hello Joburgers, Montecasino has a hot new addition to its restaurant scene. Malt Barrel & Fire offers a true gastro pub experience with a varied and extensive food and drinks menu that puts the spotlight firmly on malts of every kind, from whiskey to beer to milkshakes.
Angelo Kellaris, owner and general manager of Malt, explains that the ‘Malt’ concept has evolved through his 21 years of experience in the foodservice industry in South Africa, owning and managing a wide range of restaurant types, and getting to understand a consumer market that appreciates upmarket cuisine and an amazing array of beers, whiskies, other spirits, wines, and non-alcoholic beverages.

Malt Barrel & Fire gets its name from the four fireplaces and four burning barrels that make it the perfect venue for chilly winter nights, while adding ambience in summer. The décor is stylish and comfortable, with wood and copper features, and soft lighting, which all add to the warmth of the restaurant,” he explains. Malt also has an upstairs dining area for up to 24 people that can be used for private functions and is ideal for birthday parties or corporate events.
Malt Barrel & Fire is a sister restaurant to Malt Bar & Grill in Silverlakes in Pretoria. The huge selection of malts includes 16 draught beers on tap (including Hoegaarden, Soweto Cherry Ale and Red Rock Nine Inch Ale); over 40 bottled beers from around the world; an ever-growing selection of more than 80 different whiskies – malts and blends (including unusual whiskies like The Glenlivet Code Special Edition, Tweeddale Grain of Truth, Scallywag, Rock Oyster 18YO, Glenfiddich Project XX and Glenfiddich IPA); delicious and different cocktails for every occasion; spirits of all types; carefully selected wines; and really great tasting milkshakes such as Nutella & Marshmallow, Ferrero Rocher, Caramel Popcorn, and Oreo.

The incomparable beverage selection notwithstanding, Kellaris says Malt is first and foremost a gastro pub, with a food menu that is “at the heart of the business, designed to delight the most discerning palate, using only the freshest and best ingredients.” Favourites include the Firecracker ribs – Sweet BBQ pork or beef ribs basted with a lemon peri sauce and served with fries, which also feature as one of several ‘quick order items for Teatro patrons’. The menu includes breakfast / brunch items served until 11h00, snacks and light meals, including Deep fried and crumbed fresh avocado and fried halloumi cheese served with sriracha mayo; platters and salads; chicken and fish, which includes one of Malt’s signature dishes – spatchcock chicken basted in peri-peri or lemon & herb and grilled in true Portuguese tradition served with fries; a range of popular Malt burgers; pizzas; grills; waffles & milkshakes; and desserts.
