Where to pre-order booze for level 3 lockdown

May 22, 2020, Author: Candice May

We know that being stuck in your home isn’t easy. But like dancing, talking to strangers and writing bad poetry, it’s a lot easier when you involve booze. Unfortunately, until we move down to level 3 lockdown, a trip to the bottle store for a six pack and a bottle of Jack isn’t considered an ‘essential function’. And it goes without saying that local bottle stores are going to be manically busy, frenzied and frenetic when that day comes around in early June. So, to make sure you aren’t disappointed when alcohol sales are allowed again, we’ve rounded up our top places to pre-order from.

Steenberg Farm

Steenberg Farm’s online wine shop is open, so you can pre-order your favourite wines and will be notified when delivery will take place, as soon as they’re fully operational again. Some wines are even on special for the month of May, like the Steenberg Sauvignon Black 2019 which is discounted by 20%. We highly recommend this wine, which enchants with aromas of fresh lime zest, elderflower blossom, freshly cut grass and sweet bell pepper. We also advise ordering the Steenberg 1682 Chardonnay MCC that exudes freshness and pure fruit on the nose and is lively on the palate, as well as the Steenberg Merlot 2017 – an excellent winter wine that’s rich with juicy red fruit and characteristic herbal highlights. And did we mention the Steenberg Catharina Red Blend 2016? A taste of heaven!

To pre-order, go to www.steenbergfarm.com

Norman Goodfellows

To ensure that you don’t go thirsty when level 4 lockdown is over, Norman Goodfellows is taking pre-orders. On their website, you can shop a huge selection of whiskies, wines, gins, premium spirits and more. Did you know that they stock 788 wines and 198 gins? You’re spoilt for choice! We recommend checking out the La Motte Sauvignon Blanc, Haute Cabrière Chardonnay Pinot Noir and Nederburg The Winemaster’s Cabernet Sauvignon, which are all currently on sale at great prices. If you’re looking to #treatyoself for making it to level 3 lockdown, splurge on the Meerlust Rubicon – a wine that’s classic in style with vivacious black fruit, intense spiciness and beautifully structured, ripe, satin tannins. In terms of spirits, why not try something different, like the Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla Gin or Crystal Head Vodka?

Smiths Gin

Joburg based distiller, Smiths Gin is taking pre-orders to be delivered for free as soon as the lockdown level and regulations allow. Gin lovers can take advantage of their Trio Special and save R150 when they order all three variants – Citrus, Elderflower and Spice. Otherwise, you’ll pay R350 per bottle. We’re big fans of all three of founder Rachel Smith’s gins, with our top pick being the Elderflower – an elegant gin with elderflower, elderberry, angelica, coriander and juniper that effortlessly pairs with cucumber, fresh lime or basil. The Citrus is a more refreshing gin that goes well with your favourite premium tonic or grapefruit soda, while the Spice brings rich and robust botanicals of cumin, cinnamon, coriander, cardamom, clove, bay leaf and black pepper to the more traditional juniper.

Solly Kramers Parkhurst

Another large liquor store taking pre-orders is Solly Kramers Parkhurst. Once level 3 lockdown comes into effect, they’ll deliver or you can pick up your order. PS: Delivery is free in and around Joburg! Their online store stocks a wide range of the most unique and popular liquor and gifts. The Boschendal Brut and Buitenverwachting Brut MCC sparkling wines are perfect for a celebration, as is the Graham Beck Gorgeous sparkling wine – an exquisite sparkling rosé with a palate of raspberry cream, juicy strawberries and nuances of spiced peach and delicate cherry blossom, packaged in a beautiful bottle. Other special drinks on offer include the Johnnie Walker White Walker whisky, Bisquit VSOP cognac, Jin Gin Rooibos & Honey gin and Kahlúa to make cosy, boozy hot chocolate that’s perfect for these chilly nights.

From bottleneck to bottles en route. That’s right, Level 3 is almost here. We have been waiting for this day and WE ARE PUMPED! The last couple weeks has seen incredible support for our online store – a huge thank you to everyone that has ordered. We will endeavor to get every order out as quickly as possible, but also will be needing stock that wineries can only deliver from 1 June, so there will be delays on some orders already received. If you are ordering this week, please note that this will likely only be shipped 5-10 days after Level 3 begins as we process all the existing orders first. We appreciate your patience here. Otherwise, again, a massive THANK YOU and please give us a shout at [email protected] with any queries on orders or deliveries. #PublikWineOnline #LevelThree #LevelThreeYayyyyaaaayyyyy

Publik

Publik is taking pre-orders for their handpicked variety of independent artisan wines. Just keep in mind that while they’ll endeavour to get every order out as quickly as possible, they also need stock that wineries can only deliver from 1 June 2020, so there will be delays on some orders. If you’re ordering this week, your order will only be shipped five to 10 days after level 3 lockdown begins as they’re processing all the existing orders first. But we promise it will be well worth the wait! We love the light, fruity Snow Mountain The Mistress 2018, the dry, fresh Kolab Project ‘Ghost & The Darkness’ Red 2015 and the refreshing, crunchy The Blacksmith Barebones Cinsault 2019 for winter. The online store also stocks some delish bubblies, spirits and beers, such as the Avondale Armilla Blanc de Blanc MCC Brut 2013, AA Badenhorst Family Wines Caperitif, Giant Gin and Strip Horse Lager.  There are cocktail kits too, to whip up favourite cocktails like the Aperol Spritz or Negroni at home.

Blaauwklippen Vineyards

Blaauwklippen Vineyards’ online store has been bustling with pre-orders for level 3 lockdown delivery. You can shop the Zinfandel and Blaauwklippen wine ranges (all wines are sold in a case of six 750ml bottles) as well as their craft gins and specialties. For the colder months, the Blaauwklippen Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is a top choice: Dark black berries and intense dark chocolate aromas combine with hints of pencil shavings and cassis, while pure fruit and dark velvet tannins on the palate are supported by a savoury midpalate and a fresh yet textured finish. The Blaauwklippen De Blaauwe Klip bordeaux-style blend is just as delish, with dark cassis and cigar box with plum-chocolate pudding notes on the nose and a vibrant palate with velvet tannins and a serious mid-palate and length.

To pre-order, go to www.blaauwklippen.com

Tokara

Tokara’s online store is open and orders placed to the value of R1,000 and more will receive complimentary delivery for within the South African borders. Our absolute favourites are the Tokara Sauvignon Blanc 2019, Tokara Chardonnay 2018, Tokara Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 and Tokara Director’s Reserve Red – a stunning wine with flavours of dark cherries, raspberries and blackcurrant with a hint of herbal spice on the mid-palate, which leads to fine, firm tannins on the finish. The Methode Cap Classique Blanc de Blanc 2012 is another must-try: This bubbly, presented in a stylish gift box, has a fine, consistent mousse interplays with aromas of freshly baked brioche, fresh apples and a hint of lemon blossom typical of chardonnay.  Tokara’s online store also sells their award-winning olive oil, which is just as extraordinary as their wine. Consider adding a bottle of the Tokara Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil to your basket before placing your order.

To pre-order, go to www.tokara.com

We’ll be adding to this list as we’re made aware of other places taking pre-orders for level 3 lockdown delivery, so be sure to come back later.
